Education on food security with LOVE CANTEEN campaign
All smiles at the LOVE CANTEEN Exhibition launching ceremony
Love transcends statuses and background, as proven by a group of 16 Bachelor of Communication (Honours) Public Relations (PR) students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) when they successfully launched their LOVE CANTEEN Exhibition on 26 March 2024 at UTAR Kampar Campus.
FAS Dean Dr Lee Lai Meng, who represented UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, officiated the exhibition, and said in her speech, “I am proud of our students for their initiative in organising an exhibition aimed at raising awareness about food security among underprivileged communities in Malaysia, with a special focus on aiding our local community here in Perak. I also wish to express my sincere gratitude to Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong for their noble collaboration with UTAR PR students in assisting the community. By directing their efforts towards Perak, our students showcase a profound dedication to their local community. They recognise the importance of initiating meaningful change within their immediate surroundings and are resolute in their determination to make a positive impact in our own vicinity.”
Dr Lee emphasising the importance of serving the community
She added, “As an educational institution guided by the bedrock principle “By the people, for the people”, UTAR consistently fosters in its students not only intellectual growth but also a strong sense of conscience. We instil in them a sense of duty and empathy towards their fellow human beings. And I am proud to say that our PR students have embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly. They understand that true greatness lies not in personal achievements but in service to others.”
Joining Dr Lee for the launching were Assistant Coordinator of Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong Ms Siew Li Me, PR Department Head Cik Bazlin Darina binti Ahmad Tajudin and Organising Chairperson Leong Yin Xuan. Present to witness the ceremony were guests from Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong Ms Chin Li Mei and Mr Ngew Hoong Cheong, along with staff and students.
The launching ceremony was marked with the piecing of puzzle pieces onto the jigsaw, which symbolised the efforts of various parties in solving the food crisis, and the guests symbolised the various groups in society that need to work together in order to help those in need. The smiling cutlery symbolised not only the act of giving food but also the joy and satisfaction of nourishing others. It reflected the joy experienced by both the giver and the receiver in sharing food. Next, a captivating video presentation featuring student interviews shed light on the impact of the Love Canteen initiative.
Guests were treated to a compelling drama performance titled "改变的种子" (Seeds of Change), which showcased the organising committee’s experience in volunteering with Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong, and the real stories and challenges faced by underprivileged communities. Later, the guests embarked on a guided tour of the "Love Canteen" Exhibition, gaining first-hand insights into the journey of the members throughout the campaign.
Leong explained, “We are embarking on a journey dedicated to raising awareness and taking action towards addressing a pressing issue of food security among the underprivileged communities. As we gather here, let us acknowledge the significance of our campaign LOVE CANTEEN. It reminds us that love knows no boundaries when it comes to extending a helping hand to those in need. Our campaign’s objectives are to raise awareness of food security issues, educate others on the realities faced by the underprivileged community, and serve as a catalyst for positive change.”
Leong explaining the aim of the campaign
She added, “Through this campaign, we seek to inspire and educate fellow students to join us in this noble cause and make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Our exhibition showcases the resilience and hope that inspire us to do more. I am proud to lead a team of 16 strong members who have committed themselves and worked hard. I also express my heartfelt gratitude to Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong. It is this partnership that has turned our aspiration into action. We hope to pass along this spirit of compassion and service to others. Let us stand together to create a world where no one goes hungry.”
Ms Siew explaining the food distribution process that takes place each day
Ms Siew expressed in her speech that they are grateful to the PR students for their commitment in helping the underprivileged community. She also commended the students’ efforts and preparations for making this campaign a success. She then explained that Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong, which was established in 2016, has been distributing food to underprivileged members of society every day. They provide help to lower the burden on the affected families.
Prior to the launching ceremony, the PR group conducted two food distribution activities under their Love Canteen campaign on 27 February 2024 in Ipoh, and on 5 March 2024 in Kampar. In the initial food distribution, the team effectively distributed 1,000 food packs throughout the city of Ipoh, directly assisting individuals in need, including the elderly and those facing financial hardships.
At the second event, approximately 100 elderly individuals were able to enjoy meals provided by Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong. Following this, the group devoted the remaining half of the day to distributing food to various other charity organisations. The food reached various charity houses, including Beautiful Gate for the Disabled Foundation, I Care Center, Pusat Jagaan Kasih Sayang Kampar and Rumah Orang Tua Gopeng.
Other highlights at the launching ceremony included a DIY Workshop for visitors to learn and make their own compost using food waste and an awareness talk that enlightened participants on the effects of the current economy on underprivileged communities.
