Embracing unity: Talk on Segulai Sejalai

The UTAR Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy Studies (TCLC) hosted a compelling talk titled Segulai Sejalai on 19 March 2024 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus, drawing an engaged audience of approximately 50 attendees.

The speaker for the event was Dr Stephen Anak William, a distinguished figure born in Sarawak and a proud member of the Iban community. Dr Stephen currently serves as the political secretary to the Minister of National Unity, bringing with him a wealth of experience and expertise. Despite holding a PhD in Electronics Engineering and amassing over two decades of industrial experience, his true passion lies in public service, particularly in uplifting the underprivileged in rural areas and ensuring equitable opportunities for all segments of society.

Also present at the talk were UTAR Vice President for R&D and Commercialisation Prof Ts Dr Faidz bin Abd Rahman, TCLC Chairperson Assoc Prof Dr Chin Yee Mun and Faculty of Creative Industries Department of Mass Communication Head Mr Kenneth Lee Tze Wui.

Prof Faidz said in his welcome speech, “Dr Stephen’s lecture is indeed relevant to the diverse atmosphere of the Malaysian population. When we mention segulai sejalai, we realise that each of us is different and possesses unique qualities. Yet, we accept this reality and embrace our culture to become a pot of delicious curry, coming together to build a path towards shaping and carving our future together.”

At the beginning of the talk, Dr Stephen provided a thorough explanation of the concept “Segulai Sejalai”, which finds its roots in the rich cultural heritage of the Iban community. This phrase embodies the profound notion of unity and solidarity. Dr Stephen highlighted the diverse landscape of Malaysia, encompassing varying ethnicities, educational backgrounds, socio-economic statuses, and political affiliations, each offering unique perspectives on the nation. Nevertheless, he underscored that embracing the ethos encapsulated by Segulai Sejalai entails transcending preconceived notions and uniting towards a collective vision for the nation’s future.

The talk ended with a Q&A session.
