UTAR STEM Outreach organises talk on AI and ChatGPT at Kuen Cheng High School

In conjunction with Kuen Cheng High School’s Independent Study Day on 30 March 2024, UTAR STEM Outreach along with Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Science and Engineering (LKC FES) conducted a talk titled, 迎接人工智能与ChatGPT时代的来临,你准备好了吗?”. The enlightening session captivated over 800 Form 4 students, delving into the transformative realms of AI and the revolutionary emergence of ChatGPT.

The talk was conducted by LKC FES Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Head Assoc Prof Ir Dr Chang Yoong Choon, who spoke about the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and the ChatGPT era. Dr Chang began the talk by introducing artificial intelligence, emphasising its profound impact on our future. Dr Chang highlighted artificial intelligence as an integral part of today’s fast-paced innovative society whereby it is not merely defined by algorithms and codes, but by intricate systems designed to mimic human thought processes and capabilities.

Central to Dr Chang’s presentation was the exploration of ChatGPT, a cutting-edge manifestation of artificial intelligence that stands poised to reshape human-computer interaction. He explained how ChatGPT works and what it can be used for, showing how it could lead to a future where people and machines work together in new ways.

Furthermore, he articulated the imperative for individuals to equip themselves with the requisite knowledge and skills to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven landscape. His message resonated deeply, instilling a sense of urgency and empowerment among the young minds in attendance and inspiring them to embrace the challenges and opportunities presented by the artificial intelligence revolution.

Following the illuminating talk by Dr Chang, an engaging Q&A session ensued, fostering an interactive dialogue between the students and the speaker. Students eagerly raised thought-provoking questions, ranging from inquiries about the practical applications of AI in different industries to the ethical considerations surrounding its development and deployment. Dr Chang skillfully responded to the queries, providing comprehensive explanations and invaluable perspectives that further enriched the students’ understanding.
