CFS academic shares the significance of outcome-based education
The Centre for Foundation Studies (Kampar Campus) hosted a talk titled “Outcome-Based Education 2024 (1.0)” on 3 April 2024 at UTAR Kampar Campus.
Mr Remie Lee Ren-Yi, an academic from CFS, was invited to deliver the talk, which was moderated by Ms Yuvashini Salvamani, an academic from the CFS Department of Arts and Social Sciences. Among other attendees included Mr Lim Khiew Loon, CFS Deputy Director of Student Affairs and Development, academics, staff, and students.
The objective of the talk was to introduce an approach focusing on achieving intended learning outcomes. This approach prioritises students’ development of authentic behaviours relevant to their discipline and holistic assessment within their learning context.
Mr Lee started the talk by explaining the meaning of Outcome-Based Education (OBE). He said, “The OBE approach caters to measurable Course Outcomes (COs) and Programme Outcomes (POs) by providing learning activities that help students attain these outcomes and assessing the extent to which students achieve them using explicit assessment criteria as performance indicators.”
In addition, he further emphasised the benefits of Outcome-Based Education (OBE). “By transitioning from teacher-centred to student-oriented learning, OBE has demonstrated increased effectiveness in stimulating student engagement and enriching the learning journey,” he added.
Additionally, he mentioned that OBE is required by Qualification Bodies/Professional Bodies such as the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Professional Programmes, and the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2015-2025) Higher Education, highlighting its importance in educational frameworks.
Before ending his talk, Mr Lee demonstrated the processes and framework of UTAR OBE to the participants by outlining the Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs), Programme Outcomes (PO), and Course Outcomes (CO). He also explained how these elements fit within UTAR’s Six Educational Pillars and the eight Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF) Levels of Descriptors (LODs).
The talk ended with a group photography.
