Exploring 3D modelling at STEM workshop during UTAR Open Day

Attendees who visited the UTAR Open Day at Sungai Long Campus with an interest in job prospects were extended a unique opportunity to delve into the realm of 3D modelling. Organised on 13 April 2024 by UTAR STEM Outreach, the “3D Modelling in Quantity Surveying” workshop provided participants with a hands-on experience aimed at equipping them with valuable skills in this innovative field.

Throughout the workshop, led by Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Sr Dr Lim Cheng Sim, attendees had the chance to not only grasp the fundamentals of 3D modelling but also explore its practical applications within the domain of Quantity Surveying (QS).

Dr Lim particularly focused on demonstrating the application of Information Technology (IT) in QS tasks. Participants were provided with a basic printed house floor plan and were tasked with manually measuring the floor finish areas of the house. Subsequently, they were guided through a series of simple steps to utilise 3D modelling software to obtain the floor finish areas of the same house. A comparative analysis was then conducted to assess the time spent on manual measurement versus computer-aided measurement.
