Cultural and educational discovery for UTAR exchange students

Students uncover the secrets of chocolate at Beryl’s Chocolate Shop & Museum

The Centre for Extension Education (CEE) organised a memorable day trip for exchange students from the Sungai Long and Kampar Campuses on 20 July 2024. Guided by three CEE staff members, the excursion was designed not only to explore Kuala Lumpur’s iconic landmarks but also to foster cross-campus friendships and cultural appreciation.

The journey began at Beryl’s Chocolate Shop & Museum in Seri Kembangan as students delved into the art of chocolate-making, learning about Malaysia’s contribution to the global chocolate industry while sampling various chocolates. Furthermore, witnessing the meticulous process from bean to bar left the participants with a sweet appreciation for Malaysia’s culinary heritage.

Joined by Kampar Campus peers, they toured to the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre as they immersed themselves in the craftsmanship of Malaysian pewterware. Students eagerly participated in pewter crafting workshops, guided by skilled artisans, creating unique mementoes that reflected both tradition and innovation.

The trip was followed by a tour of the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery at Sasana Kijang. The tour provided invaluable insights into Malaysia’s economic history and artistic achievements. Exhibits detailing the evolution of our currency, financial systems, and local artworks captivated the exchange students, deepening their understanding of Malaysia’s economic and cultural landscape.

Moreover, students also engaged in lively exchanges with local artisans on exquisite batik textiles and traditional handicrafts while sampling authentic Malaysian cuisine at the Central Market. The next station was the Petronas Twin Tower, as a testament to Malaysia’s modern architectural marvels. As students ascend the Skybridge, they marvelled at the breathtaking views of Kuala Lumpur’s skyline as day turned to dusk, encapsulating the essence of our dynamic capital city.

The excursion not only broadened students’ knowledge of Malaysia’s rich cultural tapestry and economic progress but also strengthened bonds among exchange students. It was a testament to UTAR’s commitment to holistic education, fostering global perspectives, and nurturing lifelong friendships. The day trip exemplified UTAR’s dedication to providing transformative learning experiences that transcend classrooms, shaping well-rounded individuals prepared to thrive in a diverse and interconnected world.
