In a world where borders are increasingly virtual and
cultural exchange is more accessible than ever, the recent international
networking event between UTAR and Nijin Academy exemplified the growing
trend of global collaboration. Hosted via Zoom by Ms Tomoko from Nijin
Academy on 7 August 2024, the event was designed to foster international
friendships, cultural understanding, and academic exchange between the
students of the two institutions. The success of the event was further
bolstered by the support and coordination of UTAR Office of International
Affairs (OIA) Deputy Director Assoc Prof Dr Chen, I-Chi and OIA staff.

The event kicked off with a warm welcome and a series
of self-introductions from both parties. The
initial segment allowed participants to break the ice, establish
connections, and set the tone for a collaborative and engaging experience.
Each student shared a little about themselves, their academic pursuits, and
their personal interests, offering a glimpse into the diverse and dynamic
student body at UTAR.
Cultural sharing by Nijin Academy
students
Following the self-introductions, representatives
from Nijin Academy took the stage with a captivating segment titled “My
Oshi”. This segment was a delightful deep dive into Japanese culture, where
students from Nijin Academy introduced various elements of their rich
cultural heritage. The presentation featured an introduction to the concept
of “daruma”, a traditional
Japanese doll symbolising perseverance and good luck. Additionally,
participants were treated to insights into Japanese cultural practices,
iconic cultural sites, and even a demonstration of comic drawing, which was
a nod to Japan’s world-renowned manga culture. The presentation not only
highlighted the uniqueness of Japanese traditions but also provided an
educational and entertaining experience for the UTAR participants.
Sharing session by UTAR students
The final segment of the event was led by UTAR
students, who took the opportunity to introduce both UTAR Sungai Long and
Kampar Campuses and share the vibrancy of Malaysian culture. They provided
an overview of the university’s campuses, showcasing the facilities and the
scenic beauty. They also gave Nijin Academy students a virtual tour of
Malaysia’s famous night markets, offering a taste of the country’s diverse
culinary landscape. From the sizzling street food stalls to the colourful
array of local delicacies. They also delved into other aspects of Malaysian
culture, including traditional festivals and arts that Malaysia is known
for.
