Datuk Seri Wong
The Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy
Studies (TCLC) hosted another session under its Lecture Series, featuring
Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai. The talk, titled What Universities Don’t Teach
You, was held on 27 November 2024 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
During the session, Datuk Seri Wong emphasised the
pivotal role of soft skills in navigating the challenges of today’s
fast-evolving industries. He shared that while academic knowledge lays the
foundation, soft skills such as communication, adaptability, emotional
intelligence, and leadership are the tools that help individuals excel in
their careers. He highlighted how these skills not only meet current
industry demands but also empower individuals to climb the career ladder and
achieve personal growth.
In addition, he also spoke about the importance of
building networks, fostering collaboration, making wise decisions, and being
adaptable to change. He stressed that cultivating analytical and critical
thinking is essential for solving complex problems and staying relevant in
competitive industries. These qualities, he explained, are crucial for
professionals to effectively respond to the ever-changing demands of the
workplace.
Drawing from his over four decades of experience in
journalism and leadership roles, Datuk Seri Wong shared captivating stories
and practical advice. His insights inspired students to focus on honing
their interpersonal and leadership skills alongside their academic pursuits.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where
attendees had the opportunity to delve deeper into his experiences and seek
advice on career and personal development.
