The Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) at UTAR Kampar Campus, in collaboration with the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT), hosted a successful workshop titled “App in a Day with Microsoft Low-Code Programming” on 23 November 2024. The online event brought together 227 UTAR staff and students eager to explore the innovative capabilities of Microsoft Power Apps.
Moderated by the Director of CFS Kampar, Ts Tan Lee Siew, the session featured two experienced facilitators from S-QI Pro Advisor PLT: Mr Hong Peck Keong and Mr Wesley Goh Yi Yong. Mr Hong, an accomplished ISO consultant and one of the pioneering contributors to Microsoft Power Apps, shared his wealth of experience in app development and digitalisation. Mr Wesley, a skilled business analyst, demonstrated practical applications of Power Apps in real-world scenarios, emphasising its utility for data analysis and process enhancement.
During the workshop, participants were introduced to the core features of Microsoft Power Apps, including its intuitive low-code interface, seamless data integration and versatile app development capabilities. The interactive session also allowed participants to explore concepts such as data structure, app design and the power of Excel-like formulas for rapid development. Additionally, the facilitators demonstrated how Power Apps could integrate with other Microsoft tools to enhance productivity, streamline workflows and address real-world challenges effectively.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a keen interest in attending more sessions focused on Power Apps. Many appreciated the opportunity to gain practical insights into app development and explore its potential applications in various industries. “This sharing session has the potential to inspire more people to explore app development with low code solutions,” Mr Hong noted, adding that he hopes to see UTAR students leveraging these skills in competitive platforms.
Ts Tan expressed gratitude for Mr Hong’s dedication to corporate social responsibility through his involvement in the workshop, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in inspiring students. “The session effectively demonstrated the potential of low-code platforms like Power Apps to revolutionise app development. It was a meaningful step in empowering our students and staff with essential digital skills,” Ts Tan remarked. Ms Hoh Ming Chee, the workshop coordinator also from CFS Kampar, stated that the integration capabilities of Power Apps with existing IT ecosystems and the simplicity of data manipulation truly resonates with modern IT practices.
The workshop emphasised the increasing demand for low-code solutions in various industries and UTAR’s commitment to equipping its community with relevant, future-ready skills. As the digital landscape evolves, initiatives like these ensure that UTAR students remain at the forefront of technological innovation.
