UTAR STEM Outreach, in collaboration with the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of
Engineering and Science (LKC FES), the Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI),
and the Department of Programme Promotion (DPP), organised a STEM Workshop
for 31 Senior Three students from Chung Hua Independent High School,
Seremban on 3 December 2024 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
The event featured engaging workshops led by a team of experienced
academics. LKC FES academics Ir Ts Dr Yip Chun Chieh and Dr Woon Kai Siong
conducted the “Build a Paper Column Challenge”, which encouraged
participants to explore the principles of structural stability creatively.
Assoc Prof Dr Pang Yean Ling from LKC FES led a session on crafting DIY hand
sanitiser, offering the students a practical understanding of basic
chemistry and hygiene practices. LKC FES academic Ts Dr Wong Mee Chu’s
“Heart of Steel” workshop introduced the students to the fascinating world
of materials science and its real-world applications. Meanwhile, Mr Tan Han
Keong, Dr Lim Zi Jie, and Dr Bong Mei Fern from FCI conducted an interactive
session titled “How to Make a 2D Game Under 2 Hours”, providing a glimpse
into the world of game design and coding.
Beyond the workshops, the students also participated in a campus tour and
attended a briefing on UTAR’s educational programmes, giving them a closer
look at university life and the opportunities available in higher education.
This outreach programme not only fostered curiosity and creativity among
the participants but also reflected UTAR’s commitment to advancing the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event aligned with goals such as
Quality Education (Goal 4), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (Goal
9), and Good Health and Well-being (Goal 3), emphasising the importance of
education in building a sustainable future.
