STEM Outreach Programme for SMK Convent Kajang students

Eighty-two students and six teachers from SMK Convent Kajang visited UTAR Sungai Long Campus under the UTAR STEM Outreach programme on 12 December 2024 for a memorable day of learning and creativity. The collaborative event was organised by UTAR STEM Outreach, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), the Division of Programme Promotion (DPP), and the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS). It aimed to provide students with a blend of academic and artistic experiences.

The visit presented two unique workshop tracks designed to spark inspiration among young learners.

Half of the students participated in STEM activities led by LKC FES academics. The sessions featured engaging topics such as Computer Networks Fundamentals by Dr Khor Kok Chin and Programming Fundamentals using Scratch by Dr Nawaf Hassan Mohammed Mohsen Shrifan. Through hands-on activities, students explored concepts in computer science, enhancing their understanding of networks and programming in an interactive environment.

The other group immersed themselves in the Colourful Minds Therapeutic Watercolour Painting Workshop led by Puan Suriati binti Mohd Jaafar from CFS. The creative session offered students a chance to express themselves artistically while learning the therapeutic benefits of watercolour painting.

In addition to the workshops, students toured UTAR’s vibrant campus, experiencing university life first-hand. The event emphasised not only academic and creative skills but also fostered collaboration, exploration and inspiration, aligning with key Sustainable Development Goals.

The event underscored UTAR’s commitment to community engagement and the empowerment of young learners. Initiatives like these not only spark students’ interest in higher education but also provide a platform for them to explore diverse fields of study, bridging the gap between school and university learning.
