UTAR signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Axcell Solutions Sdn Bhd, marking the beginning of an impactful collaboration aimed at enhancing cybersecurity awareness and capability, on 20 December 2024 at its Sungai Long Campus.
The MoU was signed by UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat and Axcell Solutions Sdn Bhd Tech Director Mr Gan Chee Tak, witnessed by UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Ir Prof Dr Goi Bok Min and Axcell Solutions Sdn Bhd Director Mr Hoong Cheong Heng.
Under the MoU, both parties will work together to implement a Cyber Security Awareness Programme for UTAR staff, including email phishing tests and other measures to gauge and improve their awareness of potential cyber threats. Another key initiative under the MoU is the "Train-the-Trainer" programme whereby Axcell Solutions will equip selected UTAR staff with the necessary skills to conduct cybersecurity awareness training. These trained individuals can then extend their expertise to a wider community, ensuring the sustainability and far-reaching impact of this effort.
Prof Dato’ Ewe highlighted the importance of academic-industry partnerships in addressing contemporary challenges and fostering innovation. He said, “This partnership demonstrates how academia and industry can come together to create practical solutions and build safer, more resilient digital environments. It is an important step in strengthening the cybersecurity expertise and awareness within UTAR and beyond.”
Mr Gan expressed confidence in the collaboration, emphasising its potential to foster greater cybersecurity resilience across academic and industry sectors. “The rise of cyber threats has become a growing concern for organisation and individuals alike. We firmly believe that awareness is the first line of defence. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to identify and mitigate cyber risks, we hope to inspire a culture of proactive and informed decision making in digital environments.”
