The Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) hosted an immersive cultural
exchange programme, welcoming 17 staff and students from Hebei Vocational
University of Technology and Engineering (HEBUT),
China on 13 August 2023 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The programme, which
took place from 13 to 19 August 2023, was designed to foster cross-cultural
understanding between UTAR and HEBUT.
The programme commenced with a warm reception at Kuala Lumpur International
Airport, followed by an engaging opening ceremony. The ceremony, graced by
UTAR DSSC, set the tone for the week-long exchange. Participants were
treated to a comprehensive UTAR campus tour where they were given the chance
to immerse themselves in the university’s academic vibrancy. Students dived
into Malaysia’s rich heritage through workshops introducing Malaysian
culture and a visit to the iconic Batu Malai Sri Murugan Temple at Batu
Caves. The excursion to KLCC showcased the modern architectural marvels of
Kuala Lumpur against its historical backdrop.

Participants engaged with local SMEs to gain insights into Malaysian
business practices. A unique session on understanding the renowned Malaysian
fruit, durian, enriched their cultural experience. The day concluded with a
lively visit to a bustling night market, offering a glimpse into Malaysia’s
vibrant street life.

The itinerary included a visit to the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre to
celebrate Malaysia’s craftsmanship. Traditional games and Malay dance
workshops fostered a lively exchange of skills and cultural knowledge among
the participants.

A tantalising exploration of Malaysian food culture took place at 'Sehari',
followed by a visit to the Malaysia Chinese Museum, delving deeper into the
country’s historical tapestry. The programme culminated in a memorable
closing dinner cruise at Putrajaya Lake, where friendships were solidified
amidst picturesque surroundings.

The participants embarked on a day trip to Malacca to explore the city’s
rich historical heritage and further deepen their understanding of
Malaysia’s diverse culture.

As the programme drew to a close, heartfelt farewells were exchanged at
Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Saturday, 19 August 2023. The exchange
left an indelible mark, fostering lasting international friendships and
understanding.

bridge gaps and create opportunities for global connections, celebrating
diversity and unity among nations.
