
Representatives from UTAR and SDASS
On 20 June 2024, UTAR and the Shandong Academy of 
	Social Sciences (SDASS), China, officially signed a memorandum of 
	understanding (MoU) to enhance academic exchange and cooperation. UTAR 
	President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat and SDASS Vice President Prof Zhang 
	Fenglian

The signing ceremony was held at UTAR Sungai Long 
	Campus, reflecting the commitment of both institutions to fostering 
	international partnerships and advancing collaborative research. 
Representatives from both institutions attended the 
	event. From SDASS, attendees included Prof Zhang Jin, Director of the 
	Institute of Contemporary Religious Studies; Prof Yan Jinggao, Deputy 
	Director of the Institute of Philosophy; Prof Song Nuan, Deputy Director of 
	the Institute of History; and Prof Zheng Yan from the Institute of Culture 
	Studies. 
UTAR representatives included Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei, Dean of the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS); Assoc Prof Dr Chin Chong Foh, ICS Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes; Dr Ng Kar Yee, Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) Deputy Dean for Academic Development and Undergraduate Programmes; Sr Dr Chin Hon Choong, FAM Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes; Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn, Director of the Office of International Affairs (OIA); Ms Liu Dan, OIA Senior Assistant Manager; and Mr Lee Jenn Yuan, Assistant Manager at the Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy Studies.

The MoU aimed to facilitate cultural exchanges and 
	strengthen academic collaboration between China and Malaysia. Both parties 
	will engage in joint research and host academic conferences on mutually 
	agreed topics, enhancing the academic influence and visibility of both 
	institutions. The agreement will also facilitate short-term visits by 
	scholars for research and conferences, with arrangements to be confirmed 
	through mutual agreement and written consent. Furthermore, both parties will 
	exchange academic materials, including journals, books, and research 
	reports, adhering to national information security and confidentiality 
	regulations.
In his address, Prof Dato’ Ewe emphasised the significance of this partnership in promoting academic excellence and cultural understanding. He remarked, “This MoU not only marks the formal beginning of our collaboration but also signifies a future of closer cooperation and mutual benefit. We look forward to deepening our academic exchanges and collaboration, driving research innovation, and contributing wisdom and strength to solving scientific and social issues.”

Prof Zhang Fenglian highlighted the mutual benefits of the collaboration, stating, “Our academy also aims to contribute to the promotion of exchanges between China and Malaysia, especially in the education field. We ask for the strong support of the UTAR President and all educators, and we also invite you all to visit our academy at a suitable opportunity.”

The event concluded with a discussion, providing an 
	opportunity for attendees to discuss potential areas of collaboration in 
	greater detail. A photograph session followed, capturing the momentous 
	occasion and symbolising the beginning of a promising partnership. 
This MoU signing demonstrates UTAR’s dedication to 
	expanding its international collaborations, enriching its academic 
	environment, and providing diverse opportunities for growth and development
