To inspire and encourage student engagement in the
fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), UTAR
STEM Outreach organised a series of hands-on STEM activities on 29 June
2024, in conjunction with the National Training Week and the MIND
Competitions 2024.
Facilitated by UTAR undergraduate students, the
hands-on activities were attended by 14 participants. Among the activities
held were “Balancing Forks and Cans” and “Turmeric Drawing Paper”. In the
“Balancing Forks and Cans” activity, participants attempted to balance forks
on glass and aluminium cans filled with water, testing their knowledge of
physics principles. The “Turmeric Drawing Paper” activity involved drawing
on turmeric-treated paper, which changes colour to brown or reddish-brown
when exposed to alkali substances, thereby educating participants on the
nature of alkali substances.
This series of activities was highly successful, supporting key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
