Participants at “STEM Insights:
Reflexes, Heartbeats, and Hands-On Learning” workshop
UTAR STEM Outreach, in partnership with the Division
of Programme Promotion (DPP), Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and
Science (LKC FES), and the UTAR Surgical Society (USS), organised STEM
Workshops for 50 Form 4 and Form 5 students from SMJK Yok Bin on 13 July
2024.
The first workshop, titled “Introduction to Simple
Game Development with C++”, was conducted by Mr Lau Kean Hong from LKC FES.
The workshop, attended by 26 students, saw Mr Lau introducing the basics of
the C++ programming language and demonstrating how it can be used for simple
game development. The students were
highly engaged as they learned about the functionality and application of
C++.
The second workshop, titled “STEM Insights: Reflexes,
Heartbeats, and Hands-On Learning”, was led by M. Kandiah Faculty of
Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Yan Naing Soe
alongside USS advisor and students. Attended by 24 students, the workshop
provided insights into how reflexes and heartbeats function in the human
body. Under the guidance of Dr Yan and with the support of USS advisors and
students, participants had the chance to measure heartbeats using a
stethoscope. This hands-on approach ensured that students not only grasped
theoretical concepts but also gained practical experience in applying their
knowledge.
The STEM Workshops provided an enjoyable learning
experience for the students, combining theoretical knowledge with practical,
hands-on activities. This approach enabled them to apply what they had
learned in real-life scenarios, enhancing their understanding and skills.
