On 4 July 2024, UTAR Sungai Long Campus came alive
with laughter and entertainment during a vibrant Cross Talk Show night. The
event featured an array of top-tier performers from both local and
international stages, delivering a delightful blend of wit and humour in
Mandarin and attracting more than 350 attendees.
The show was a collaborative effort organised by
UTAR, the Postgraduate Chinese Studies Society, and the Chinese Language
Society, with generous sponsorship from the Nirwana Group. Distinguished
guests included UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat and Nirwana
Group Representative Mr Steven Thor. Additionally, the Cross Talk Show
Organising Committee Chairperson, Mr Tan Kok Eng, representing the Member of
Parliament YB Dato’ Sri Dr Wee Jeck Seng, played a pivotal role in bringing
the entertaining evening to life.
Prof Dato’ Ewe remarked, “Tonight, we are fortunate not only to enjoy the wonderful performances by top cross-talk actors from overseas but also to appreciate the richly local-themed cross-talk pieces brought by Malaysian actors. This cultural exchange not only strengthens the friendship between our two regions but also greatly enriches our cultural lives, allowing us to deeply appreciate the diversity and inclusivity of culture.”

Mr Tan underscored the significance of preserving Chinese cultural heritage through cross-talk, noting that they organise five shows each year. He emphasised the success of their inaugural performance at the MCA headquarters, which attracted over 1,000 attendees. Reaffirming their mission to provide high-quality cultural events, he expressed gratitude to all involved, urged the audience to cherish and transmit their cultural heritage, and officially commenced the event.

The performance featured local talents such as Kelvin
Leong and two young performers, alongside four distinguished Taiwanese
cross-talk actors: Chu De-Kang, Hsieh Hsiao-ling, Liu Shih-min, and Chang
Ya-li. The Taiwanese performers delighted the audience with traditional
routines such as Shuanghuang
(double act), Kuaiban (clapper
talk), tongue twisters, and Liuhuo
(humorous dialogues). Meanwhile, the Malaysian performers brought a local
flavour to the stage with pieces reflecting Malaysian life and bilingual
skits.
The event successfully provided an evening of entertainment that was both meaningful and memorable.
