On 25 July 2024, UTAR welcomed visitors from Shenzhen
University (SZU), China at its Sungai Long Campus.
The guests included Shenzhen University Faculty of
Education Executive Director and Institute of Higher Education Director Prof
Dr Li Jun, Division of Arts Deputy Director Prof Liu Kun, and Faculty of
Education Assistant Researcher Ms Wang Bi.
As part of the visit, Prof Li delivered a talk titled
“The Chinese Model of Modernization of Higher Education”. The visit also
included discussions between SZU and UTAR representatives.
Prof Li's talk covered two primary topics. First, he
addressed the modernisation of higher education in China over the past
century. He began by sharing the renowned history of Chinese higher
education, highlighting key differences between Chinese and Western systems.
Prof Li then elaborated on the three stages of modernisation in Chinese
higher education: material reforms that improved physical infrastructure and
resources, institutional reforms that enhanced governance structures and
policies, and ideological reforms that shifted educational philosophies and
teaching methods.
The second part of Prof Li’s talk delved into the
main models of modernisation in Chinese higher education since the country’s
reform. He presented data from 2023, including the total number of
universities and students in China, providing a comprehensive overview of
the current state of higher education in China. He also discussed the
National College Entrance Examination system (高考) and its significant impact
on the modernisation of higher education in China. He concluded by
introducing “China’s Education Modernisation 2035” a comprehensive strategic
plan launched by the China government with the aim of transforming and
modernising the education system by 2035.
In a nutshell, Prof Dr Li’s speech explained the
evolution and modernisation of higher education in China. He revealed how
China’s long-standing and historical education system is adapting to modern
requirements, aiming to enhance the quality of education and contribute to
national development.
Also present at the talk were UTAR Vice President for
Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong (via
Microsoft Teams), UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) Dean and Confucius
Institute (Malaysia) Director Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei, Faculty of
Accountancy and Management (FAM) Dean Dr Pok Wei Fong, Centre for Research
in Traditional Chinese Medicine Chairperson Dr Foo Chai Nien, Centre for
Curriculum Development and Innovation Head Dr Ngeow Yeok Meng, Office of
International Affairs (OIA) Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn and UTAR
staff.
The visit concluded with a souvenir exchange and a group photography session. o:p>
