Dr Shih, on the other hand, provided a concise
overview of the establishment of the “Siyuan Programme”. She said, “The term
‘Siyuan’ signifies ‘reflecting on the source’, underscoring the
principle of reciprocating to society’s benefits.” According to Dr Shih, the
programme was designed to cultivate exceptional young scholars while
advocating social engagement. Commencing in 2001 under the initiative of a
Tsinghua University alumnus, the programme sought to mobilise budding
entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley to contribute to their nation and community.
Consequently, the “Siyuan Plan” was inaugurated. Initially centred at
Tsinghua University, the initiative has since expanded and now encompasses
eight participating universities. Dr Shih ended his speech by expressing
gratitude to UTAR for extending an invitation to visit the Sungai Long
Campus and engaging in fruitful discussions.
