UTAR STEM Outreach in collaboration with Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) organised a workshop titled “Ecosystem of Building Structure” for 129 students from Year 8 and Year 10 at Tenby Schools Setia EcoHill. The workshop, held on 14 March 2024, featured a lecture by LKC FES academic Ir Ts Dr Yip Chun Chieh, who elucidated the principles of civil engineering in constructing structures and how these structures bear loads through scaled models.
The students had the opportunity to engage in the “Build A Paper Column Challenge” at the workshop. They were tasked with constructing single or multiple columns using limited resources consisting of five pieces of A4 sized papers. The objective of the challenge was to ensure that the columns could withstand applied loads without collapsing. The workshop was conducted by LKC FES academics Dr Yip, Dr Lim Ming Han and Dr Lee Yee Ling.
