Lee Kong Chian Faculty of
Engineering and Science (LKC FES) hosted its biannual Final Year Project
(FYP) Poster Competition and Industry Interaction Day (IID) for the January
2024 trimester on 23 April 2024 at the Multipurpose Hall (MPH) of UTAR
Sungai Long Campus.
The competition provided students
with an opportunity to display their skills, ideas and talent while also
offering them valuable experience in tackling real-life obstacles. It also
aimed at motivating them to actively participate in external competitions
and enhance their professional development.
The FYP Poster Competition and
Industry Interaction Day is one of the faculty’s highly anticipated events.
It served as a platform for final-year students to highlight their
independence, originality, and ethical research practices. Furthermore, it
aimed to foster a culture of innovation and curiosity, encouraging students
to delve deeper into their research interests while preparing them for the
competitive landscape beyond academia.
It saw a total of 54 shortlisted
posters under nine different tracks, out of 389 posters submitted by 429
students from various LKC FES departments. The nine tracks were Track One:
Department of Architecture & Sustainable Design (DASD), Track Two:
Department of Mathematical and Actuarial Sciences (DMAS), Track Three:
Department of Mechatronics and BioMedical Engineering (DMBE), Track Four:
Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (D3E), Track Five:
Department of Internet Engineering and Computer Science (DIECS), Track Six:
Department of Surveying (DS), Track Seven: Department of Civil Engineering
(DCI), Track Eight: Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering (DMME)
and Track Nine: Department of Chemical Engineering (DCL).
Organisers and judges
at the FYP Poster Competition and Industry Interaction Day
The posters were evaluated by a
total of 21 judges based on the poster’s appearance, content and
organisation, as well as the student’s oral presentation. The top three
poster winners under each track were awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes,
and took home RM300, RM200 and RM100 respectively. All the participants also
received a certificate of participation. Furthermore, the winner of the
Most-liked Poster Award, was awarded a cash prize of RM150 and a
certificate.

LKC FES Dean Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She
delivered a speech at the competition’s prize-giving ceremony, thanking the
judges and congratulating the participants. He said, “We have the poster
competition to help our students improve their communication skills,
especially in summarising their research findings and conveying the message
to audiences effectively.”
He concluded, “I would like to
congratulate the students and hope that the spirit of creativity and
innovation will continue even after you complete your studies.”

After winning both the Gold prize for Track Seven and
the Most-Liked Poster award, Britney Sim expressed, “I didn’t expect to win
these awards, so I was shocked and happy when I heard my name called for
both categories. I would like to advise future participants to refer to
senior’s posters and seek advice from them to make your work more perfect.”
Jeslynn Tan Zi Yi
Jeslynn Tan, the Gold winner of
Track One, said, “I am very thankful to receive this award. I would like to
thank my lecturers for all the advice and guidance they have given me, as
well as my classmates and friends for their assistance. Additionally, I am
grateful to my family for their support.”
Loo Kar Kuan
Track Two Gold winner, Loo said,
“I wish to thank my supervisor Mr Loh Wing Son for providing the greatest
support he could during the project, as well as during presentations and
poster preparations. Also, I would like to thank my friends and family for
their support.”
Tan Joe Yan
Tan, Gold winner of Track Three,
expressed, “I would like to advise my juniors to start early and not
procrastinate. Try to update your progress every day and communicate more
with your supervisors. They are willing to help students all the time. I
would also like to thank my supervisors, Ms Tan Yin Qing and Dr Chan Siow
Cheng. They have been very helpful and have replied to my messages even
after working hours.”
Khor Yin Loon
Gold winner of Track Four, Khor
said, “I feel very grateful to have had this opportunity to receive the Gold
award in this competition. This presentation has given me an opportunity to
develop the project into a business application rather than purely focusing
on research.”
Cheah Chee Ken
Cheah, Gold winner of Track Nine,
enthused, “I am very happy to have had the opportunity to explore this kind
of project, which is related to environmentally friendly chemicals,” and
advised, “It is beneficial to include more visual content in your poster to
better explain your project rather than relying solely on words.”

Overall, the January 2024
trimester Poster Competition and Industry Interaction Day was a huge success
with the cooperation of all the parties involved. UTAR congratulates all the
winners of the competition for their amazing achievements.
