Press conference on Mind Competitions 2024 and 18th MFotM

A press conference was held to promote the Mind Competitions 2024 and 18th Malaysia Festival of the Mind (MFotM) by the Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM), UTAR and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF) on 29 April 2024 at Sungai Long Campus.

Present at the press conference were Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) Vice Chairman Ir Academician Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Chuah Hean Teik, UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, MMLM committee member Datuk Lim Si Cheng, MMLM Treasurer Mr Ong Whee Tiong, MMLM Assistant Secretary Ms Lim Guat Yen, Mind Competitions Judges Mr Teo Kim Foo, Mr Wong Wan Jiun, Mr West Wong Woon Chieng and SJK(C) Kuen Cheng 1 Headmistress Madam Lye Fei Ching.

At the press conference, SJK(C) Kuen Cheng 1 student Wong Yu Xin, SJK(C) Ave Maria Convent Ipoh student Teo Lee Ting and SJK(C) Kuen Cheng 2 student Leong Ming Ho demonstrated memory skills and mental calculation.

Ms Chor Sin Suen, a parent, mentioned, “I consistently encourage my child to revise and practice, employing various methods to motivate his studies. I prefer a gentle approach, guiding him in managing his time effectively. He is welcome to enjoy some playtime once his studies are complete.”

Wong Yu Xin shared, “It was quite easy for me; I managed to complete all the questions in a short amount of time, just like the practice sessions at home.” Meanwhile, Leong Ming Ho expressed, “The questions resembled those I had practised at home, but I encountered difficulty with the final section, which involved calculating the speed of a car.”

Whitney from SoroTouch Malaysia said, “I hope to empower kids with mental calculation abilities to provide them with a strong foundation in STEM education.”

Individuals from diverse backgrounds are welcome to participate in the competition. The objective is to promote greater awareness throughout Malaysian communities of all ages, highlighting the development of critical thinking, memory enhancement, and creativity skills. Additionally, the competitions also aim to introduce and promote various techniques and skills pertaining to the improvement of mental literacy among Malaysians.

The competition will feature three primary categories: Memory Competition, Mind Mapping Competition, and Mental Calculation Competition. Each of these main categories includes sub-categories such as Random Words, Random Numbers, Dates and Events, Random Letters of the Alphabet, Mind Mapping from Written Text, Free-Style Creative Mind Maps, Mental Additions, and Mental Multiplications.
