UTAR STEM Outreach organises engaging workshops for 1,398 SMK Seri Sentosa students

In a bid to foster hands-on learning experience and promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, UTAR’s STEM Outreach in collaboration with Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), organised a series of engaging workshops in conjunction with Karnival Sains dan Matematik 2024 SMK Seri Sentosa for 1,398 students at SMK Seri Sentosa, Kuala Lumpur on 29 April 2024.

Led by esteemed academics and enthusiastic students from LKC FES, the workshops offered a diverse array of activities aimed at igniting curiosity and nurturing practical skills. Dr Ong Chuan Fang conducted the workshop on Equipment for Precision Measurements in Civil Engineering where students delved into the intricacies of civil engineering by exploring cutting-edge measurement equipment and gaining insights into the precision required in construction projects.

Dr Tan Weng Cheong did a demonstration on the wonders of 3D printing, showcasing its applications and potential in various fields, inspiring budding innovators to embrace this transformative technology while Sr Li Zi Qian and Ms Lay Pei Sin guided students through the intricacies of computer-aided quantity surveying, providing valuable insights into efficient project management and cost estimation techniques. Through hands-on experiments, students were exposed to the science behind ink chromatography conducted by Dr Wong Kam Huei. Meanwhile, Ts Dr Tan Kok Hong encouraged the students to explore their artistic expression through architectural sketching.

At the event, Bachelor of Science (Honours) Actuarial Science student Eliza Tang Kah Li engaged the students in a dynamic game of Math Bingo while Actuarial Science student Ling Jing Yi conducted the classic game of Tic Tac Toe with elements of mathematical concepts. These workshops also aligned with key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 4 Quality Education and SDG 9 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
