UTAR and NCUT exchange MoU to promote academic and cultural exchanges

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) exchange ceremony was held between UTAR and the North China University of Technology (NCUT), China, on 25 October 2024 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The signatories were UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat and NCUT Secretary of Party Committee and President Prof Dr Liu Jun.

The MoU aimed to establish a partnership between both institutions to promote academic and cultural exchanges, including student mobility programmes, faculty and staff exchanges, shared academic resources, collaborative curriculum development, joint publications, and research conferences. Both parties were committed to fostering a dynamic educational and research environment through these collaborative efforts.

Present at the event were NCUT Office of International Affairs Director and International School Dean Prof Han Fei, School of Civil Engineering Dean Prof Ji Yingbo, School of Electrical and Control Engineering Dean Prof Dong Zhe, School of Humanities and Law Secretary of the Party Committee Prof Yuan Fengshi and International School Head of Study Abroad Programmes Ms Tang Yingjuan.

UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science Dean Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She, Institute of Chinese Studies Dean Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei and Office of International Affairs (OIA) Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn were present as well.

Prof Dato’ Ewe expressed, “NCUT and UTAR offer many similar programmes and courses. The Engineering programme is also one of our key disciplines, where we have achieved considerable success in teaching and research. Therefore, we believe both parties can connect and collaborate well in engineering and other areas, realising resource sharing and unlocking further cooperation potential. The specific details of the collaboration can perhaps be explored and discussed more deeply at a later time, but personally, I am very optimistic about the cooperation between the two institutions.”

Prof Liu shared NCUT’s recent achievements and strategic developments, emphasising the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and global partnerships. He shared several thoughtful suggestions for collaboration, highlighting the mutual benefits of academic exchange. In his concluding remarks, Prof Liu extended a warm invitation to Prof Dato’ Ewe to attend the 80th-anniversary celebration of NCUT in 2026, a milestone event to honour NCUT’s legacy and strengthen ties between the institutions.
