In an enriching cultural and academic journey, 20
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students from UTAR
recently embarked on an eight-day study tour to Guangxi Medical University
in Nanning, China. The group, led by Dr Wong Jun Leong, included 16
first-year students and four second-year students. They engaged in various
educational, medical, and cultural experiences designed to deepen their
understanding of medical practices, research, and Chinese culture. The tour
spanned from 19 October to 26 October 2024, providing participants a unique
opportunity to broaden their perspectives on global medical practices and
life experience in China.

On 19 October 2024, the students arrived at
Nanning Wuxu International Airport, where they were warmly welcomed by Ms
Xie Li, a representative from Guangxi Medical University. After the
reception, the group headed to their hostel to settle in. Later, they
ventured out to experience the local food scene, eagerly trying traditional
dishes for their first dinner in Nanning. By 11pm, they returned to the
hostel, ready to rest for the exciting days to come.
The following day was dedicated to exploring the
city. With the freedom to visit local landmarks, the students immersed
themselves in Nanning’s rich culture, gaining firsthand experience with
local customs, cuisine, and traditions—an introduction that set the stage
for a deeper cultural appreciation.

The programme officially began on 21 October 2024
with an opening ceremony at Guangxi Medical University School of
International Education. Following the formalities, the students toured key
campus facilities, including the Life Sciences Hall and the Library. The
tour offered them insights into the university’s resources, infrastructure,
and academic environment. They also enjoyed the chance to photograph their
memorable moments at the campus to make this journey unforgettable.

In the afternoon, the group participated in their
first cultural experience class. They were introduced to traditional Chinese
crafts, creating beautiful handmade fans under the guidance of an
experienced local instructor. The activity allowed them to appreciate
Chinese craftsmanship and artistry, fostering a deeper connection to their
host culture.

The students had their first medical field
experience on 22 October 2024, with a tour of the Oncology Hospital
affiliated with Guangxi Medical University. There, the UTAR students were
introduced to advanced cancer treatment technologies and had the chance to
discuss ongoing research with leading oncology professionals.

In the afternoon, the students were divided into
two groups to attend separate classes alongside local Chinese students,
allowing them to observe real classroom dynamics at Guangxi Medical
University. One group joined a lecture on neurology, while the other
attended a class on paediatrics. This immersive experience offered UTAR
students the chance to see Chinese teaching approaches first hand and gain
insights into specialised fields of medicine. Observing alongside local
students also deepened their understanding of the educational environment
and enhanced their learning experience.
On 23 October 2024, the students once again split
into two groups to attend separate classes alongside local Chinese students.
One group joined a lecture on Radiology, while the other attended a session
on Internal Medicine. This setup provided an authentic view of clinical and
diagnostic training in a different educational system. By participating in
these classes with local students, the UTAR students gained insights into
distinct teaching techniques and case study approaches used in Chinese
medical education, broadening their understanding of global healthcare
practices.
Later, they participated in a Tai Chi class, where they learned
the 24-step simplified form under the guidance of a Tai Chi master.
Practising Tai Chi not only
provided health benefits but also exposed them to an essential aspect of
Chinese cultural heritage, fostering holistic learning.

The students continued their exploration on 24
October 2024 with tours of the Guangxi Medical University School of Pharmacy
and School of Preclinical Science. During these visits, they engaged in
discussions with faculty members, exploring research projects, and learning
about the curriculum structure and laboratory facilities. The exchange
provided valuable insight into various academic paths within medical
education, encouraging students to consider interdisciplinary research
opportunities.

In the afternoon, the students visited the
University Clinical Skills Training Centre, where they engaged in a series
of immersive, hands-on training sessions. Under expert supervision, they
participated in operation theatre simulations and laparoscopic simulation
exercises, giving them a taste of real-world surgical skills. They also
practised CPR techniques and observed a labour simulation using an advanced
augmented reality (AR) device similar to Vision Pro, which provided a highly
realistic view of childbirth. These interactive sessions enriched their
practical skills and gave them invaluable exposure to cutting-edge medical
training technologies.
