Students and
facilitators during the workshop
The Centre for Foundation Studies of
Sungai Long Campus (CFS SL) successfully organised a Scratch Programming
Workshop for children aged 8 to 12 on 14 September 2024. Held at UTAR Sungai
Long Campus, the workshop aimed to introduce young participants to the
basics of programming through the fun and interactive platform of Scratch.
The workshop saw children engage in
activities designed to foster creativity, enhance problem-solving abilities,
and develop basic coding skills. The facilitators introduced participants to
Scratch’s interface, where the children created their own animations and
simple games.
The workshop featured hands-on
sessions where participants learned essential programming concepts,
including motion, control and events through projects such as “Animate Your
Name” and “Interactive Story or Game”. The event culminated in a showcase
session where participants proudly presented their projects and received
positive feedback from instructors.
The workshop received excellent
feedback from both participants and their parents. Many children expressed
excitement about their newfound coding skills, while parents praised the
workshop for sparking interest in programming at an early age. Each
participant walked away with a certificate of completion, a pen drive, and a
set of printed resources, ensuring they could continue exploring the world
of programming beyond the workshop.
With its success, the Scratch Programming Workshop positively set a solid foundation for UTAR’s ongoing efforts to promote STEM education among younger generations. The organising committee members were Mrs B. A. Jesica Malani binti B. A. Sugathapala, Ms Kong Jee Kim, Mr Khoo Kah Yeang, Mr Ling Kock Sheng, Ms Yeoh Li-Cheng and Mr Abdolrasool Taghvaee.
