Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) hosted its biannual Final Year Project (FYP) Poster Competition and Industry Interaction Day on 12 September 2024 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The event brought together final-year students, faculty members, and industry professionals for a day of innovation, collaboration, and recognition. Students presented their research and engineering solutions to real-world problems, while industry experts offered guidance and explored potential partnerships.

The morning session was dedicated to both the Industry Interaction Day and the judging of the FYP Poster Competition. Students had the opportunity to engage directly with representatives from 27 companies, namely AdoreSys Sdn Bhd, Advancecon Infra Sdn Bhd, ATC Surface Finishing Sdn Bhd, Auto Count Sdn Bhd, Belleza Dulce Sdn Bhd, Boilermech Sdn Bhd, Cenergi SEA, Cheng Hua Engineering Works Sdn Bhd, Daikin Applied (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Dindings Poultry Processing Sdn Bhd, Eco Power Synergy Sdn Bhd, Ernst & Young Consulting Sdn Bhd, Greatech Integration (M) Sdn Bhd, Hanson Building Materials Malaysia Sdn Bhd, IFP Engineering Consultancy Sdn Bhd, Jati Tinggi Holding Sdn Bhd, JF Microtechnology Sdn Bhd, J.U.B.M Sdn Bhd, L7 True Projex Sdn Bhd, Mynext by TalentCorp, Numac Machinery Sdn Bhd, Sepakat Setia Perunding Sdn Bhd, Sincerely Dyeing & Finishing Sdn Bhd, TCS Construction Sdn Bhd, Top-Mech Elevator Sdn Bhd, Treehouz Asia Sdn Bhd, and Vital Healthcare Sdn Bhd.

These industry professionals provided invaluable feedback on student projects and explored future collaboration and internship possibilities. Many students found this interaction to be a crucial learning experience, as it gave them direct insights into the expectations and realities of their chosen industries.

Alongside the industry engagement, the FYP Poster Competition took place. A total of 62 posters were shortlisted for presentation, covering a diverse range of disciplines across nine academic tracks. These tracks included Department of Architecture & Sustainable Design (DASD), Department of Mathematical and Actuarial Sciences (DMAS), Department of Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering (DMBE), Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (D3E), Department of Computing (DC), Department of Surveying (DS), Department of Civil Engineering (DCI), Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering (DMME), and Department of Chemical Engineering (DCL). The competition allowed students to demonstrate their technical skills and creativity in addressing complex real-world challenges.

The judges, comprising 21 experts from both academia and industry, evaluated the posters based on their content, design, and the students’ oral presentations. Projects were assessed not only for their technical rigour but also for their practical applications, with particular emphasis on how well students communicated their ideas and findings.

As the morning session concluded, the panel completed their evaluations, and the event transitioned into the afternoon, where the awards ceremony took place.

Prof Yap delivering his speech

The afternoon session began with an inspiring speech from LKC FES Dean Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She. He highlighted the purpose of the event, saying, “The poster competition is designed to help our students enhance their communication skills, particularly in condensing their research findings and delivering the message clearly to different audiences.”

He added, “I want to congratulate all the students and encourage them to carry forward the spirit of creativity and innovation beyond their studies.”

The IOS Award Ceremony followed after Prof Yap’s speech, recognising the university’s top-performing students. IOS Services Sdn Bhd representative, Ir Dr Cheong Thiam Fook presented the IOS Best Graduate Award and IOS Top Student Award to the award winners.
