UTAR and Shaoguan University (SGU), China exchanged a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 22 October 2024 at UTAR Kampar Campus.
The signatories were UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat and SGU Vice Chancellor Prof Guo Huishi. However, Prof Dato’ Ewe was represented by UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong at the event.
The UTAR-SGU collaboration aimed to launch joint international research projects, talent training programmes, and academic exchanges, including faculty visits for research, teaching, and participation in academic events. It also aimed to promote student mobility and internships, educational advancement and joint supervision for master’s programmes.
Present at the ceremony were SGU Academic Affairs Office Director Prof Huang Changzheng, Science and Technology Office Director Assoc Prof Dr Xiao Zhengzhong, School of Biology and Agriculture Dean Prof Chen Xiaoyuan, School of Intelligent Engineering Dean Prof Li Jin, Foreign Exchange and Cooperation Office Deputy Director Ms Liu Shuangna; Standard Research & Training Institute, Hong Kong Executive Director Dr Nova Tan, PhD candidate Mr Li Qingbiao and Master’s candidate Ms Yang Yuanzhen.
Also present were UTAR Faculty of Science (FSc) Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Dr Phoon Lee Quen, Office of International Affairs (OIA) Deputy Director Assoc Prof Dr Chen, I-Chi and Senior Assistant Manager Ms Loi Sien Mun. Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Assoc Prof Ts Dr Lee Kim Yee and OIA Manager Ms Liu Dan from Sungai Long Campus attended the ceremony via online platform.
Prof Choong addressed the guests and gave a brief introduction of UTAR, saying, “As a higher education that attaches great importance to international development, UTAR has always been very active in cooperating with higher education institutions and corporate around the world. We hope both institutions can jointly contribute to academic, research and talent training in the future and carry out more cooperative projects through this MoU.”
Prof Guo, who has visited Malaysia for the first time, thanked UTAR for the hospitality and arrangement. He then introduced the local customs and culture of Shaoguan, as well as the establishment, development and international collaboration of Shaoguan University. He mentioned, “We are looking forward to the collaboration between SGU and UTAR. In addition, we cordially welcome UTAR’s management, academics and students to visit SGU for an exchange and study tour.”
