For his foresight, visionary
leadership and contributions to the university and the nation, Tun Dr Ling
Liong Sik was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Business by TAR
UMT at their convocation on 7 September 2024 at TAR UMT Setapak Campus.
Presenting the award to Tun Ling
was TARC Education Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Wee
Ka Siong. Accompanying Datuk Seri Wee at the award presentation were TAR UMT
Board of Governors Chairman Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy and TAR UMT President Ir
Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei.
Among the key invited guests who
were present to witness the award presentation were Toh Puan Ena Ling, UTAR
BOT and Council member Datuk Lee Leck Cheng, UTAR Council members Tan Sri
Dato’ Seri Chor Chee Heong and Datuk Lim Si Cheng, UTAR Hospital
Board Chairman Ir Academician Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Chuah Hean
Teik, UEF Secretary Mr Ong Whee
Tiong, Tan Sri Ng Lay Swee, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, Datuk Dr Tan Chik
Heok and many other esteemed guests, including distinguished members of the
TAR UMT Board of Trustees and Board of Governors. UTAR Vice President Ir
Prof Dr Goi Bok Min represented UTAR President, and Ms Ong Soo Weon,
Director of UTAR Division of Corporate Communication and Public Relations
was also present to cover the event.
Tun Ling’s transformational
leadership touched the lives of many people for the duration of his
contribution towards the establishment and growth of TAR College and
subsequently TAR UMT. Turning up to celebrate with Tun Ling on this special
occasion were his friends and supporters, with some from out of state. Many
old friends, supporters and TAR UMT staff lined up to greet, shake hands and
take photos with Tun Ling LIong Sik and Toh Puan Ena Ling. It was indeed
very meaningful and memorable for Tun Ling to receive this award and be
remembered by so many people who appreciate his contributions.
Tun Ling served as council
chairman of TAR College from 1986 to 2004. He was the fourth and longest
serving council chairman of TAR College then. Under his leadership, student
enrolment grew from 7,500 in 1986 to 30,000 by 2004, and the number of
courses offered expanded from 23 to 116.
In his speech, Datuk Seri Dr Wee
commended Tun Ling on his exceptional leadership that saw the TAR College KL
Campus expand into branches in five states. He also said the Tun’s visionary
approach let to the introduction of new courses and ground-breaking
collaborations with international universities and professional bodies.
Tun Ling, in his acceptance speech
congratulated TAR UMT on the occasion of the convocation and praised the
university for training notable graduates contributing to the nation’s
productivity and economic and social growth. He accepted the honorary
doctorate with pride and immense gratitude.
Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik is currently
the Chancellor of UTAR. He was appointed the Chancellor in January 2017
after serving as UTAR Council Chairman from 2002 to 2017.
