Exploring Mathematical Conundrums: A Stimulating Seminar at UTAR

UTAR had the privilege of hosting Heriot-Watt University Malaysia academic Dr Lim Ling Hong for a mathematics seminar on 30 August 2024 at its Sungai Long Campus. Titled “Mathematics Conundrums”, the event was organised by the Centre for Foundation Studies of UTAR Sungai Long Campus (CFS SL). It was specifically catered to students who were interested in deepening their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Dr Lim, an assistant professor at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, has been a part of the academic community since 2017. With a rich background in mathematics education, she has also served in various capacities at institutions such as UTAR, Terra College, and the University of Malaya. Dr Lim’s extensive experience and expertise in mathematics education, particularly in computational and mathematical physics, made her the perfect speaker for the seminar.

Throughout the seminar, Dr Lim captivated the audience by exploring complex mathematical problems, or “conundrums”. A key highlight was the interactive component, where groups of five students were tasked with solving conundrums selected by Dr Lim. This fostered an engaging environment and encouraged active participation from the students. Nearly 150 attendees were present, all leaving with a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of mathematics.

Overall, the Mathematics Conundrum Seminar was a great success, reinforcing UTAR’s dedication to providing students with opportunities to learn from industry leaders. The event concluded with sincere gratitude extended to Dr Lim for her invaluable contributions to the academic growth of UTAR students.
