5cience Xplain @ Shen Jai High School 2024 sparks students’ interest in STEM

The highly anticipated science fair, 5cience Xplain @ Shen Jai High School 2024, was jointly organised by Shen Jai High School, UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus, the Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT), Xidian University, and the National University of Singapore. The event was held on 5 July 2024 as part of the school’s Science, Mathematics, and Computer Camp.

Shen Jai High School Principal Major (R) Chia Hock Chye, emphasised that the event not only engages students with science-related subjects but also sparks their interest in mathematics and computers. He expressed his hope that the activities would cultivate students’ critical thinking skills, fostering independent thought and continuous exploration.

Vice Chairman of the Board at Shen Jai High School, Mr Chang Wai Choy mentioned that the exhibition aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn and apply scientific methods. He also encouraged students to explore and actively participate in various science and technology innovation competitions.

UTAR FEGT Dean Ir Prof Dr Ng Choon Aun emphasised the growing importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as everyone moves into the era of Industry 4.0. He highlighted that the exhibition serves as a valuable platform to inspire enthusiasm and interest in STEM fields among all participants.

Also present at the event were CFS Kampar Campus Director Ts Tan Lee Siew, members of the school board, and the alumni association of Shen Jai High School.

The event featured a wide range of captivating activities and exhibits, covering scientific disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Information Technology, and Engineering. The activities offered an interactive opportunity for students to delve into the wonders of science and technology through hands-on experience. Some of the activities included “Maths Basketball”, “Cryptography: The Art of Secret Writing”, “Let Your Colours Shine”, “Forensic Fingerprinting: Let the Innocent Go Free”, and “Magnetic Levitation”.

The students’ feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Liew Yan Thong, a S2AB student, said, “The Chemistry activities were so interesting. I am particularly amazed by the magical transformation of colours.”

Heah Wing Yee, also from S2AB, shared, “I liked the hands-on experiences of making soap. The soap-making process was fun and interesting.”
