The Department of Economics at the Faculty of
Accountancy and Management (FAM) and the Global Economics Society GES)
jointly organised a community service event, distributing books related to
Chinese history and development to students from Kuen Chen High School on 7
September 2024.
Department of Economics Head Mr Low Choon Wei, along
with academics Dr Har Wai Mun, Dr Ooi Bee Chen, Dr Lee Sin Yee and GES
students, namely Nicholas Yap Ming Wai, Bernice Tan Tung Ern, Yap Ting Guan,
and Lau Pik Xuan, facilitated the event.
The event saw the participation of about 1,600
students. A significant highlight was the presentation by Dr Har on Baima Feima (白马飞马) philosophy, an important concept in
Chinese formal logic that emphasises the relationship between generalisation
and specification. At the presentation, Dr Har explored three case studies
which showcased the practical applications of the philosophy in business
strategy and personal development.

Furthermore, Nicholas Yap and Yap shared their
academic experiences studying the Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Global
Economics programme at UTAR. They stressed the importance of soft skills
attainment and time management at the university, offering students valuable
insights into its programmes and diverse opportunities.
The community service broadened students’ cultural
perspectives, promoted a love for reading, and fostered cross-cultural
connections. This collaborative initiative strengthened the ties between
UTAR and the local educational community and left a lasting impact on the
students, encouraging them to explore new academic paths and global
perspectives.
