The Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), in collaboration with the Faculty of Science (FSc) and the Sustainable Development Club at UTAR, conducted an insightful event titled “Biodiversity and Conservation: Sharing between Hong Kong and Malaysia.” This event served as a collaborative exchange focusing on biodiversity and conservation efforts between Hong Kong and Malaysia.

The event was organised on 28 August 2024 at UTAR Kampar Campus. Approximately 25 guests, including staff and students invited from Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, Hong Kong, participated alongside the organisers, FBF Dean Assoc Prof Dr Au Yong Hui Nee and UTAR Sustainable Development Club Advisor Dr Vikniswari Vija Kumaran. Speakers from both UTAR and Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve were also invited to share their insights on biodiversity and sustainable development.

The event began with an introduction to Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, Hong Kong, presented by the project manager, Ms Colleen Chiu. Ms Chiu shared their efforts in promoting an environmentally friendly lifestyle, monitoring ecological environments, and continuously promoting education on ecological and rural culture conservation, with a special focus on butterflies.

Subsequently, sharing sessions were carried out by guest speakers. The first speaker, Dr Tan Ji from FSc, delivered a short talk titled “An Overview of Flora and Fauna Biodiversity in Malaysia,” followed by another short talk from Mr Tou Jing Yi from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology. Mr Tou’s talk was titled “Wild Malaysian Colors: The Birds and Butterflies.” The event continued with a brief presentation by Mr Eric Luk, project officer at Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, on their conservation efforts in Hong Kong, specifically focusing on butterflies and the Belt and Road initiatives. Dr Au Yong concluded the talk by encouraging ongoing collaboration between both UTAR and Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, Hong Kong, in promoting the ecological environment of the entire Earth. This was followed by an interactive discussion session among presenters and participants, fostering a deeper understanding of conservation efforts between the two economies.

Lastly, the team from Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, Hong Kong, was taken on a campus tour, assisted by Ms Loi Sien Mun from the Office of International Affairs.
