UTAR and China Media Group forge stronger ties at cultural exchange event

UTAR participated in the cultural diplomacy event, China & Malaysia: Joining Hands for Shared Prosperity, hosted by China Media Group (CMG) at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur on 15 April 2025. The event celebrated the enduring friendship between China and Malaysia and aimed to strengthen bilateral ties through cultural exchange and cooperation.

UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat represented the university at the event, joining dignitaries and guests in celebrating the launch of the Malay-language version of the documentary series “Classic Quotes by Xi Jinping”. The series, produced by CMG, focused on themes such as a shared future for humanity, cultural heritage and innovation, biodiversity conservation, and mutual learning among civilisations. It highlighted President Xi Jinping’s governance philosophies and China’s rich historical and cultural traditions.

In addition, CMG and UTAR exchanged a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the event, underscoring their commitment to future collaborations in media, academic exchanges, and cultural initiatives. The partnership aligned with UTAR’s dedication to fostering global partnerships and enriching the educational experience for its students and academic community.

The signatories were Prof Dato’ Ewe and CMG President Mr Shen Hai Xiong. The document was exchanged by Prof Dato’ Ewe and CMG Director of the General Editorial Office Mr Liang Jian Zeng.

The event also featured speeches from Malaysian and Chinese leaders, including Malaysia’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, who emphasised the significance of President Xi’s visit to Malaysia and the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in various sectors. Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in a congratulatory letter, commended the launch of the documentary’s Malay version as a milestone in Malaysia-China cultural and media cooperation.

Other notable attendees included UTAR Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) Dean Assoc Prof Dr David Tneh Cheng Eng, FCI Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Ts Dr Ang Kok Yew, UTAR staff and students from the Journalism in Chinese Media programme.

Representatives from Malaysian media organisations and cultural institutions were also present, reflecting the event’s significance in promoting cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.

UTAR looks forward to building upon this partnership with CMG, contributing to the ongoing development of Malaysia-China relations through education, media, and cultural exchange.
