Mic in hand, spotlight on, Emcee Lemon steps out to a lively crowd— an energy that never fails to bring a big smile to her face.  During her talk titled From “ZERO” to Success: Emcee Lemon’s Thrilling Adventure from Business to the Limelight, she shared that the enthusiastic response from any audience always makes her job more fulfilling and brings joy to her work.

Held on 23 April 2025 at UTAR Kampar Campus, the talk featured Public Relations alumna, Ms Tham Le Xuan, who generously shared insights from her 12-year journey on hosting and emceeing events both locally and internationally. She spoke about her first job and how her education became one of her greatest advantages as a freelance emcee. She also highlighted on the skills she continuously hones and how they have benefitted her career.

As an emcee, she stressed the importance of public speaking, emphasising that strong communication skills are crucial. She explained, “Even if you are not an emcee, public speaking is still essential in many aspects of your life. It helps you secure potential employment, deliver presentations more effectively and fluently, and engage productively with team members. Being able to speak confidently in public boosts your confidence, provides clarity, and enhances your charisma. It is also a powerful skill for content creators, educators, and entrepreneurs.”

She then shared some key skills to appear as a confident speaker, including maintaining a strong presence and posture, using vocal variety and tone, storytelling, managing time and pacing, reading the audience, and staying adaptable.

“Being an emcee is more than just speaking well,” Tham revealed. “There are many things that you will need to look into and to care for, including practising self-confidence, handling clients, dealing with mishaps, mental and physical preparation, voice care, and navigating difficult crowds. Other common challenges I faced were uncertainty, judgement, and income instability, which have sharpened my problem-solving skills. It enabled me to think critically and be creative with my solutions,” Tham elucidated.

Also present at the talk were Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) Kampar Director Ts Tan Lee Siew, CFS Kampar Deputy Director for Academic Ms Phang Ying Ning, lecturers, and staff.
