Innovative UTAR projects recognised at 2025 Vitrox Tech4Good Challenge

UTAR proudly celebrates the outstanding achievements of three student teams from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) at the 2025 Vitrox Tech4Good Challenge, held on 26 July 2025 at Vitrox Campus 2.0, Penang. Organised by Vitrox Technologies Sdn Bhd and coordinated by Vitrox Academy in partnership with UTAR, the national-level competition provided a dynamic platform for tertiary students to develop real-world solutions through STEM-based innovation.

Guided by the theme Technology for Social Good, the competition encouraged participants to address challenges in the fields of agriculture, healthcare and manufacturing. It emphasised sustainability, cost-effectiveness and social impact, while aligning projects with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Representing UTAR with distinction, three finalist teams showcased practical prototypes that earned them significant accolades and industry recognition.

The university congratulates the Healthcare track First Runner-Up team comprising Ding Xin Yan, Teo Guo En and Sing Zi Yi, who impressed judges with their project titled IoT-Enabled Digital Twin System with Intelligent Power Management for Healthcare Robots. Their integrated solution utilised IoT technologies, a digital twin interface and AI-driven patient recognition to address the limitations of autonomous mobile robots in hospital environments. The project demonstrated enhanced real-time monitoring, smart energy management and seamless human-robot collaboration. The team was awarded a silver medal, a RM1,500 cash prize and participation certificates. The students expressed that the experience broadened their technical and communication skills, while reinforcing their confidence to pursue further research.

In the Agriculture category, Team EZPZ, comprising Soh Min Xuan, Ng Zhi Khai and Lee Hui Ziang, achieved Second Runner-Up with their project Precision Liquid Fertilizer Management, Harnessing IoT and Microwave Sensing for Sustainable Agriculture. The team developed a portable sensor system capable of providing farmers with real-time, accurate measurements of liquid fertilizer concentration. Their innovation aimed to improve agricultural efficiency, reduce nutrient waste and minimise environmental impact. The team received RM1,000, bronze medals and a Certificate of Achievement. In their reflections, the students credited their success to UTAR’s hands-on learning environment, and expressed gratitude to their mentors, Ir Dr Mun and Dr Low for their invaluable guidance throughout the competition.

Additionally, the university commends the AgriNav team—Ooi Soo Jack, Ng Song Kiat and Brian Loh Yian Piau—for being named among the Top 8 finalists in the Agriculture track. Their project, Terrain Adaptive Base and Battery Swapping System for Agricultural Robots, introduced a novel solution for maintaining autonomous mobile robot functionality on uneven terrain. Equipped with a hot-swappable battery system and an adaptive structure, the prototype addressed challenges in rural and high-efficiency farming operations. While not among the top winners, the team viewed the opportunity to present to industry experts as highly rewarding and an important milestone in their academic journey.

All participating teams received mentorship from dedicated UTAR academics, including Ir Ts Dr Hau Lee Cheun, Ir Dr Danny Ng Wee Kiat, Ir Dr Mun Hou Kit and Dr Low Jen Hahn. Their continuous support and expert advice played a pivotal role in guiding the students from concept development to competition-ready prototypes.

UTAR extends its heartfelt congratulations to all students and mentors involved in the 2025 Vitrox Tech4Good Challenge. Their accomplishments reflect the university’s dedication to promoting academic excellence, applied research and industry collaboration. The students’ success also reaffirms UTAR’s mission of empowering future-ready graduates through experiential learning and real-world problem solving.
