UTAR Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) Doctor of Philosophy (Social Science) student Ong Lean Suat won second place for the Best Research Poster Award at the 23rd Annual Conference and 30th Anniversary of the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies (ISQOLS), held from 22 to 25 July 2025 in Luxembourg.
The conference, themed Redefining Progress: Achieving Sustainable Well-Being for All, gathered global researchers and practitioners to share findings on inclusive, multidisciplinary approaches to quality-of-life research. Jointly organised by STATEC (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies of Luxembourg) and the University of Luxembourg, with support from the Luxembourg Ministry of the Economy, the four-day event featured keynote speeches by leading scholars.
Ong’s award-winning poster, titled Exploring Factors Contributing to Flourishing and Sustainable Well-Being: Insight from Malaysian Women in Middle Adulthood, examined how Malaysian women in midlife flourish through cultural values such as interdependence, family harmony, and spiritual orientation. The research, based on responses from 546 women of diverse ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, offers insights into culturally grounded pathways to well-being.
Expressing her gratitude, Ong said, “I am honoured to receive this recognition among distinguished international researchers. It’s incredibly motivating and affirms the relevance of my work in a global context. This achievement will strengthen my confidence as I continue developing my thesis and open opportunities for networking and academic collaboration in the field of well-being.”
Ong is currently in the writing phase of her research, supervised by FAS academics Assoc Prof Dr Gan Su Wan and Dr Sarvarubini Nainee.
Ong’s recognition at ISQOLS 2025 reflects UTAR’s growing presence in international research communities and underscores the University’s commitment to impactful, culturally relevant studies that address both global and local perspectives on well-being.
