Exploring biology at Holiday Camp 2025

Understanding the wonders of biology and its connection to everyday life were at the heart of the Explore Biology: Holiday Camp 2025, held from 20 to 21 January 2025 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. Organised by UTAR and the Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF), the two-day holiday camp aimed to ignite curiosity and foster a love for the life sciences among students aged 13 to 15.

Participants explored biological themes through interactive sessions, hands-on activities, and guided discussions, gaining valuable insights into the building blocks of life and the fascinating intricacies of the natural world.

Discovering cells, DNA and life’s foundations

The camp kicked off with Theme 1, ‘Cell – A Journey Through Life’s Basic Unit’, where students embarked on a microscopic exploration of plant and animal cells. They identified cell structures, compared their functions and marvelled at how cells serve as the foundation of all living organisms. In Theme 2, ‘Decoding Life – A Journey Through Nucleic Acids’, participants were introduced to the molecular blueprints of life. Through engaging discussions and activities, they uncovered the roles of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA), the formation of chromosomes, and how these elements govern genetic inheritance.

The second day delved into human anatomy with Theme 1, ‘Inside Out – Exploring the Human Body’. Students examined the interconnected systems of the human body, such as the digestive, circulatory and respiratory systems. The session highlighted how these systems work together to sustain life. Later, in Theme 2 ‘Microbiology – The Science of the Invisible World’, participants entered the microscopic universe of microorganisms. They classified bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa, discovering the vital roles microbes play in health, industry and the environment.

The camp’s hands-on approach enabled students to apply their learning through practical experiments, reinforcing concepts with engaging worksheets and interactive challenges. The sessions emphasised the importance of connecting theory to real-world applications, leaving participants with a deeper understanding of biology’s relevance in everyday life.

The Explore Biology: Holiday Camp 2025 was a resounding success, sparking interest in the life sciences and empowering students to think critically and creatively about biology’s role in shaping the world. Participants left with new knowledge, practical skills and an enhanced appreciation for the natural world, as well as certificates commemorating their achievements.

KLESF continues to inspire young minds through educational initiatives, fostering a passion for science and innovation in future generations.
