The effort to promote inclusive special education was more than just a goal of the Kembara CSR Akademik and Kembara Jalinan Akademik programmes, organised by a team of nine academics from the Faculty of Business and Finance. These initiatives aimed to utilise inclusive approaches to foster a diverse and supportive learning environment for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, physical disabilities, and intellectual disabilities.

The programme, conducted on 21 January 2025, was officiated by the Deputy Mayor of Betong City, Tuan Ali Duding, and led by teacher Puan Tengku Noraini Raja Muda at the Regional Special Education Center 2, Yala, Betong Service Unit, Thailand. It was organised in collaboration with the Betong City Council and the local community. The programmes featured engaging activities such as Body Part Safari, Taste Detective, Drawing with Dots, Jigsaw Puzzle, and How Do You Feel Today, designed to enhance sensory exploration, emotional expression, and fine motor skills.

“The programme is designed to support children with special needs by creating an inclusive and enjoyable learning environment. We hope this initiative not only benefits the students but also strengthens educational support within the special education community,” said Project Leader, Puan Rizalniyani binti Abdul Razak. She was supported by team members Puan Suhaili binti Mohd Hussin, Puan Azni Suhaily binti Samsuri, Puan Maisarah Syazwani binti Othman, Cik Norhayati binti Md Isa, Cik Nur Hazrini binti Mohd Zahari, Puan Siti Subaryani binti Zainol, Puan Tengku Rahimah binti Tengku Arifin, and Assoc Prof Dr Zam Zuriyati binti Mohamad.

The initiative also facilitated academic discussions on potential collaborations, skill development programmes, and sustainable community initiatives between UTAR academics and key officials from Betong City. Among them were the Sheriff of Betong City, Tuan Issamae Yako, and his deputy; the Deputy Mayor of Betong City and his officers; and teachers from Special Education Center 2. Also present were Encik Ekmal Hidhir bin Mohamed Mokhtar, Penghulu Mukim Pengkalan Hulu; Cikgu Md. Zamri bin Md. Isa, Headmaster of SK Kroh pengkalan Hulu, and Cikgu Yusuf Abd Rahim from SMK Methodist (ACS) Kampar.

“This initiative aligns with UTAR’s commitment to fostering international partnerships that drive sustainable development and mutual growth. Topics such as urban planning, sustainability, and governance were explored to enhance academic-industry linkages. Both programmes support the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, SDG 10: Reduced Inequality, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. By promoting educational opportunities, reducing barriers for underserved communities, and strengthening cross-border collaborations, UTAR continues to play a vital role in regional development efforts,” said Puan Rizalniyani.
