A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was held between UTAR and Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) on 14 February 2025 at Sungai Long Campus. The event also included a visit from Chongqing Rail Transit Group Co., Ltd. The MoU aimed to foster collaboration in research, education, and academic exchange, strengthening the ties between the two institutions. The signees of the MoU were UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat and BJTU Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Institute Executive Dean Prof Han Baoming.

The MoU represents a significant step forward in enhancing research capabilities, academic exchanges, and knowledge-sharing in sustainable transportation and urban development. The collaboration will pave the way for further cooperation in innovative projects and global research initiatives.

Among the guests were BJTU Sustainable Transportation Innovation Center Chief Expert Prof Wang Jiaqiong, Chongqing Rail Transit Group Co., Ltd. Member of Party Committee and Financial Director Ms Wang Jing, and other delegates from BJTU and Chongqing Rail Transit Group Co., Ltd.
Prof Dato’ Ewe expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “This partnership between UTAR and BJTU is a strategic initiative that strengthens our research and academic connections. By working together, we can develop innovative solutions in urban transportation and contribute to regional development through sustainable infrastructure.”
Prof Wang Jiaqiong echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in advancing railway and urban transit research. He emphasised that the partnership aligns with China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Malaysia’s infrastructure development plans, ensuring mutual benefits for both institutions and industries.
Following the signing ceremony, a series of discussions were held, focusing on joint research projects, knowledge exchange programmes, and furthering academic partnerships. The event concluded with a souvenir exchange and a campus tour for the visiting delegates.
The MoU signing between UTAR and BJTU marked the beginning of a long-term collaboration, fostering academic excellence and innovation in transportation and urban development research on an international scale.
