Visit by Tsinghua University Chinese Orchestra

The Tsinghua University Chinese Orchestra visited UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 10 February 2025 for a meaningful cultural exchange session. The visit aimed to foster cultural exchange and strengthen ties between the two universities through traditional Chinese music and student interactions.

The delegation from Tsinghua University included Tsinghua University Chinese Orchestra Teacher Assoc Prof Mr Lyu Jianqiang, as well as Tsinghua University Chinese Orchestra students. They were warmly received by UTAR representatives, including Office of International Affairs Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn, Department of Student Affairs Senior Manager Ms Choong Yee Chin, Department of Soft Skills Competency Assistant Manager Ms Choon Wen Kie, and students of the UTAR Chinese Orchestra.

The event commenced with a welcome speech delivered by Dr Lai. Expressing gratitude for the visit, he emphasised the importance of cross-cultural learning and the role of music in bridging cultural gaps.

Tsinghua University Chinese Orchestra Leader Wu Haolin then shared insights on “Exploring student activities and cultural exchange,” providing an overview of how traditional music fosters collaboration and understanding among students. This was followed by a presentation titled “The development of Chinese Orchestra in Malaysia” by UTAR Chinese Orchestra President Wu Quwen, who highlighted the growth and significance of Chinese orchestral music within the Malaysian cultural landscape.

Additionally, Ms Choon introduced “UTAR Skills, UTAR Care, and UTAR Lead”, outlining UTAR’s initiatives in student development and holistic education.

Open discussion

The visit concluded with an open discussion session, leaving both parties with a deeper appreciation for cultural exchange and a strengthened bond between UTAR and Tsinghua University.

This visit served as a platform for mutual learning, emphasising the role of traditional Chinese music in fostering international collaboration and cross-cultural understanding.
