On 23 November 2024, the Department of Student Affairs of UTAR Sungai Long Campus and the Community Service Society organised a “gardening and gotong-royong” event at TTDI Edible Community Garden, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. The event aimed to promote sustainability and community engagement among UTAR students.
The TTDI Edible Community Garden, managed by local senior citizens and working adults, serves as a green haven in the urban landscape. Volunteers dedicate their weekends to cultivating a variety of plants, including medicinal, ornamental, and edible species, benefiting both the community and the environment.

Ms Margaret, the coordinator of the garden, welcomed the student volunteers with an introduction to the garden's history, government support, and the vital role of volunteers. She also shared her gardening expertise and tips. The students, in turn, introduced themselves and expressed their motivations for joining the project, united by a shared vision of contributing to a greener environment and promoting a sustainable ecosystem.

The volunteers were divided into five groups, each assigned tasks such as preparing compost, sowing seeds, and pruning plants. Guided by senior community members, the students collaborated effectively, fostering teamwork and expanding their social circles.

Reflecting on the experience, many students appreciated the opportunity to take a break from academic pressures, engage in physical activity, and contribute positively to the community. Ms Margaret concluded the session by sharing information about upcoming seminars and events, leaving participants with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation for future engagements.
