STEM engagement day for SMJK Yu Hua students

UTAR STEAM Outreach, in collaboration with the Department of Programme Promotion (DPP), successfully conducted the 3rd STEM Engagement Day at SMJK Yu Hua on 8 January 2025. The event engaged 200 Form 3 students, offering them an exciting opportunity to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through a variety of hands-on activities and engaging demonstrations. Organised by academics from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), the event aimed to ignite curiosity and inspire students to consider future careers in STEM fields.

The day’s activities were designed to be both practical and interactive, ensuring students learned in an enjoyable and stimulating environment. One of the standout workshops was the “Equipment of a civil engineer”, led by Dr Ong Chuan Fang and Assoc Prof Ir Dr Lim Siong Kang. This session allowed students to work directly with surveying tools such as the auto level and theodolite, offering them first-hand experience in measuring site elevations for road, drainage and building construction. The students gained valuable insights into how these tools are utilised in real-life civil engineering projects.

Another session, “Intelligence games with mathematics”, facilitated by Dr Pang Sook Theng, combined mathematical principles with fun games to sharpen problem-solving skills and encourage logical thinking. Adding to the excitement was the “Building with bamboo” demonstration by Head of Programme (Master of Architecture) Ts Yeow Kah Niam, which highlighted the versatility and sustainability of bamboo as a construction material.

“Stirling engine demonstration” by Dr Wong Hong Mun introduced students to the fascinating concept of energy conversion. They witnessed a Stirling engine in action, which operates by converting heat from a spirit burner into mechanical energy. The visual of the spinning flywheel brought complex scientific concepts to life in a way that was easy for students to grasp and enjoy.

By providing practical learning opportunities and fostering an appreciation for STEAM education, the event empowered students with knowledge and skills essential for a sustainable and innovative future.
