UTAR and Guangzhou Maritime University forge new academic partnership

On 19 December 2024, UTAR and Guangzhou Maritime University (GMU) marked a significant milestone with the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The ceremony celebrated the beginning of a collaborative relationship aimed at enhancing academic and research excellence between the two institutions.

The newly signed MoU established a framework for collaboration in various areas, including joint research initiatives, student and faculty exchanges and postgraduate opportunities for GMU graduates at UTAR. It also promoted academic and cultural exchanges through seminars, workshops, and other collaborative activities​​.

Commenting on the partnership, Prof Goi said, “This MoU marks an important step in our shared mission to foster international education and collaboration. By joining hands with Guangzhou Maritime University, we are not only strengthening academic ties but also contributing to the global development of talent with international perspectives and innovative capabilities.”

Prof Tao added, “This MoU marks not only the beginning of a promising academic partnership but also a deepening of the longstanding friendship between China and Malaysia. As we celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relationship, we are committed to promoting cultural exchange and collaboration, which will enrich our shared values and advance mutual understanding in education and research.”

Following the MoU signing, both institutions exchanged tokens of appreciation, symbolising their mutual respect and commitment to the partnership. A group photograph captured the occasion, and the event concluded with a roundtable discussion where representatives explored immediate collaborative opportunities​.

The ceremony was graced by a delegation from GMU, led by its President, Prof Tao Shaojing. Accompanying her were Mr Huang Zhengyi, Dean of the School of International Exchange (Office of Global Affairs); Prof Li Hong, Director of the Personnel Office; Prof Chen Aiguo, Dean of the School of Ocean Engineering; Prof Xiang Dan, Dean of the School of Computer Science (School of Artificial Intelligence); and Ms Wu Mei, Deputy Director of the President’s Office​.

Representing UTAR were Ir Prof Dr Goi Bok Min, Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development, Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She, Dean of the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES); Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn, Director of the Office of International Affairs (OIA); Ms Goo Yi Qun, Assistant Manager of OIA; and Ms Ng Beng Mui, Senior Assistant Manager of the Centre for International Student Recruitment and Education Collaboration​​.
