UTAR,through its Centre for Corporate and Community Development (CCCD), successfully conducted a two-day training programme titled Cultivating Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence: Empowering Educators for Optimal Well-Being and Leadership for 83 teachers and staff from Kuen Cheng High School.

Held at the Bangi Resort Hotel from 21 to 22 June 2025, the training focused on promoting personal well-being, emotional intelligence and leadership among educators, recognising their pivotal role in shaping the minds and hearts of future generations.

The programme comprised two main modules. The first module, Cultivating Wellbeing and Work-Life Balance Amidst Stress and Anxiety, was facilitated by UTAR Department of Student Affairs (Kampar Campus) Manager Mr Ng Foo Yek. With over two decades of experience in guidance, counselling, and mental health, Mr Ng led participants through a journey of mindfulness, helping them understand the science behind stress and anxiety, and equipping them with practical tools to navigate emotional challenges and build inner resilience.

Participants were introduced to strategies for transitioning from “autopilot mode” to “being mode,” befriending difficult emotions, and developing greater self-awareness. Mr Ng also shared insights on the neuroscience-backed Four Pillars of Wellbeing—Awareness, Connection, Insight, and Purpose—encouraging educators to reflect on their core values and sense of purpose.

The second module, Unleash the Spark: Energising Educators through Movement & Mindset, was conducted by UTAR Faculty of Arts and Social Science Head of Programme (Master of Psychology (I&OP)) Ms Sanggari Krishnan. Drawing on her background in psychology and training, Ms Sanggari guided participants through a series of engaging team-based activities designed to enhance communication, leadership, emotional intelligence, and motivation.

From the playful yet impactful Let’s Shift the Shape and Emotion Relay games to the strategic Do not end up in a Pitfall and Motivation Minefield games, participants engaged in experiential learning that fostered trust, cohesion, and collaboration. These activities helped participants better understand each other, resolve conflicts, and rediscover their passion for teaching.

The training concluded with a team reflection session, where participants shared their takeaways and committed to applying their newfound knowledge in their professional and personal lives. The programme not only empowered teachers with practical emotional wellness strategies but also reinforced the importance of mutual support, self-care, and continuous growth in the teaching profession.

UTAR’s dedication to educator development and holistic well-being was evident throughout the event, marking another meaningful collaboration between the University and Malaysia’s education community.
