Three lecturers from UTAR were invited to contribute their expertise at the 18th Malaysian National Independent Chinese Secondary School (MICSS) Science Camp, held from 28 to 31 May 2025 at Chung Ling Private High School, Penang.
Organised with the objective of enhancing scientific reasoning, hands-on experimental skills, and fostering creativity and critical thinking among secondary school students, the camp provided a dynamic platform for over 100 young science enthusiasts. Participants demonstrated strong focus, collaborative spirit, and inventive thinking, particularly during the science innovation challenge. Notably, many students encountered welding for the first time but persevered with remarkable resilience and teamwork.
UTAR’s participating academic staff included Ts Dr Lee Chen Kang from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science, who served as a judge for the science poster competition; Dr Lam Ming Quan from the Faculty of Science, who also participated as a judge alongside Dr Lee and delivered a guest lecture titled This ‘doctor’ is not that ‘doctor’: Are university lecturers masters of time management?(此doctor非彼doctor:大学讲师是时间管理大师?); and Ms Lim Chih Boon from the M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, who was invited as a guest lecturer to share insights from her professional experience in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The camp successfully fostered a deeper appreciation for science through active engagement, interdisciplinary exposure, and mentorship from academics and professionals. UTAR remains committed to supporting science education initiatives that inspire the next generation of innovators and critical thinkers.Dr Lee and Dr Lam receiving a token of appreciation from the organiser at the opening ceremony
