IMLD hosts USTB delegation for capacity building programme

The Institute of Management and Leadership Development (IMLD) hosted a Professional Development Programme on Capacity Building for Educational and Campus Support Services from 12 to 17 July 2025 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The programme was specially designed for a group of eight delegates from the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). Led by Mr Qiao Zhe, Director of the Department of Facilities and Maintenance Management, the programme aimed to strengthen the delegates’ capacity in student affairs, campus operations, and institutional governance.

One of the key speakers was Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations, who provided a comprehensive overview of UTAR’s student development framework. His session covered the University’s approach to nurturing holistic student growth, including soft skills development programmes, international mobility opportunities, and mental health support initiatives. He also introduced the structure and functions of related departments, shared practices in managing sports and recreational facilities, and discussed the University’s strategies in maintaining alumni engagement and building strong alumni networks.

Ms Loh Siaw Yien, Registrar of UTAR, and Mr Foo Cher Siang, Head of the Department of General Services at UTAR Sungai Long Campus, provided an overview of UTAR’s administrative support system and campus logistics. They shared insights into the division of roles and responsibilities, and management in areas such as campus security, facilities, and general services. The session also covered the establishment and functions of various campus logistics-related committees, highlighting UTAR’s structured and collaborative approach to supporting daily operations and long-term institutional needs.

Another session, led by Assoc Prof Ir Dr Wong Jianhui, Head of Department of Laboratory Management and Safety Administration at UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science, focused on laboratory operations. She shared insights into the key strategies for managing multidisciplinary laboratories. The session included a site tour of laboratories and facilities, offering participants first-hand exposure to UTAR’s support infrastructure for teaching and research.

In the session on leadership for administrative staff, Prof Dr Cheng Ming Yu, IMLD Director, delivered an engaging and thought-provoking session focused on the evolving role of university administrators. She discussed the core positioning and responsibilities of administrative personnel in supporting institutional goals, and guided participants through strategies for personal growth and leadership mindset transformation. The session also explored how to build cohesive, empathetic teams and strengthen collaboration across departments by fostering cross-cultural understanding and a shared purpose within the campus community.

On the final day, Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn, Director of the Office of International Affairs (OIA) and Chairperson of the UTAR Green Campus Committee (UCC), delivered a session on sustainable campus development, where he introduced UTAR’s overall sustainability strategy and key institutional initiatives. He explained the governance structure supporting these efforts, including the roles of relevant committees in driving campus-wide sustainability actions. The session also highlighted various ongoing programmes related to sustainability and environmental awareness, offering participants a practical framework for implementing sustainable development practices in higher education institutions.

During the programme, the delegates also had the opportunity to meet with UTAR President, Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, who warmly welcomed the group and reaffirmed the friendly ties between UTAR and USTB.

The programme concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony officiated by Prof Cheng, marking the successful completion of the training and UTAR’s ongoing commitment to international engagement and professional development in higher education.
