STEAM Workshop at SMK Sri Kampar

UTAR, through its STEAM Outreach initiative, brought the excitement of science and innovation to SMK Sri Kampar on 24 July 2025. The STEAM Workshop was organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT), the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) (Kampar Campus), and the Division of Programme Promotion (DPP).

The workshop was designed to make science learning more engaging and accessible, offering 151 enthusiastic Form 1 and Form 2 students the opportunity to explore real-life applications of scientific concepts. Under the guidance of dedicated UTAR academics, students participated in a variety of sessions that blended fun with education.

One of the highlights was Mari Mengenal Jantung Mammalia, a biology-focused session where students examined a real goat heart to understand the structure and function of mammalian cardiovascular systems. Led by academics from CFS, Mr Ho Wai Yew and Mr Goh Kai Wey, this activity deepened students’ knowledge of how blood flows through the heart, fostering interest in health and life sciences.

Another activity, Let Your Colours Shine, led by CFS academic Mr Voon Kah Loon and Ms Chia Phee Phee, encouraged students to uncover hidden colours using heat and light. Through this experiment, they observed visual changes that introduced them to basic chemical reactions. The engaging nature of this session helped students appreciate how science can explain everyday phenomena in creative ways.

During the Hydrogen Gas Production through Electrolysis session, students observed a hands-on demonstration of hydrogen gas being produced through electrolysis. Led by FEGT Head of Department of Chemical Engineering Dr Yeoh Wei Ming, Centre for Environment and Green Technology Chairperson Prof ChM Ts Dr Sin Jin Chung and Senior Assistant Laboratory Manager Mr Yong Tzyy Jeng, the session introduced students to the concept of clean energy and its importance in addressing future energy needs.

Lastly, creativity and sustainability were also promoted through the Brew & Built – DIY Green Coaster activity, where students created their own eco-friendly coasters using recycled materials. This session, led by FEGT academics Ts Dr Wong Ling Yong and Ts Dr Nor Faiza binti Abd Rahman, along with Assistant Laboratory Managers Ms Ng Suk Ting and Cik Nor Raihanah binti Rahani, not only introduced simple engineering and design principles but also instilled awareness of responsible consumption and environmental care.

Through this initiative, UTAR continues to play an active role in nurturing young minds and inspiring future innovators. The University remains committed to community engagement and to making STEAM education more inclusive, dynamic, and impactful for the next generation.
