In a dynamic and enriching morning of literary exploration, UTAR hosted an engaging workshop titled "Short Story Writing" led by celebrated author Dr Aneeta Sundararaj on 21 May 2025. The event, organised by the Centre for Modern Languages and Literature (CMLL), unfolded in hybrid format at Sungai Long Campus, welcoming a diverse group of participants eager to delve into the art and craft of storytelling.

Dr Aneeta Sundararaj, a distinguished Malaysian writer and researcher, is renowned for her prize-winning contributions to literature, most notably her work “Tapestry of the Mind and Other Stories” published by Penguin Random House SEA. Her extensive experience encompasses writing, editing, and storytelling mentorship, and she is widely respected for her contributions to the promotion of Malaysian narratives within a global context. Her workshop at UTAR further affirmed her role as an advocate for literary development and creative expression.
The session opened with Dr Aneeta sharing key insights into the structural elements that make a short story compelling. Drawing on her personal journey as an author, she contextualised the power of storytelling as both a personal and cultural tool. Participants were introduced to essential narrative components such as character development, setting, plot progression, and thematic clarity. The theoretical discussion seamlessly transitioned into a hands-on mock writing session, allowing attendees to immediately apply the principles discussed. This practical segment was both invigorating and illuminating, particularly for aspiring writers seeking to find their unique voice.
A highlight of the workshop was a live presentation segment where selected participants showcased their newly crafted stories. This interactive component not only reinforced the learnings of the day but also fostered a spirit of camaraderie and constructive critique among attendees. Throughout the session, Dr Aneeta provided personalised feedback, encouraging participants to refine their drafts and pursue publication opportunities.

The event drew a total of 45 participants, with 17 attending physically and 28 joining online, representing a broad spectrum of UTAR’s academic community. This diverse participation underscored the university's commitment to nurturing a holistic educational experience that goes beyond technical disciplines to include the humanities and arts.
The CMLL Short Story Writing Workshop not only enriched the participants’ literary skills but also echoed UTAR’s broader mission of fostering lifelong learning, creativity, and cultural literacy. By providing a platform for literary engagement and mentorship, the university continues to advance its dedication to developing well-rounded individuals equipped for both personal fulfilment and societal contribution.
