FCI lecturer presents solo exhibition “Dongeng” at ARTAS Galeri

Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) lecturer Mr Anis bin Che Mat presented his solo exhibition titled Dongeng: Of Myth and Self-Discovery at ARTAS Galeri. The exhibition was a personal and evocative exploration of storytelling through visual art, inviting viewers into a world shaped by imagination, memory, and cultural narratives.

Dongeng,” which translates to “folktale” or “fairy tale,” presents a visual journey that interweaves traditional mythical elements with contemporary interpretations. Drawing on age-old folklore and universal archetypes, Mr Anis uses his art to reflect on identity, belonging, and transformation. The works reimagine the figure of the mermaid, not just as a mythical being, but as a symbol of the self—navigating between worlds, identities, and histories.

In the exhibition, Mr Anis engages with mythology not as a distant observer but as an active participant. Through mixed media and layered textures, his artworks ripple with the fluidity of myth and evoke a sense of timeless storytelling. The mermaid becomes a central motif, embodying both the allure of the unknown and the tension between freedom and restraint, transformation and permanence.

Dongeng highlights the enduring power of myths in shaping contemporary thought and artistic expression, urging us to reconsider which stories we carry forward and how they continue to define us.
